Career Objective
To seek a position in an academic or research institution that encourages innovative research and promotes intellectual growth by utilizing my expertise and skills.

Bio:

Scientist and Manager of Environmental related projects with experience achieved in Spain & France after obtaining my Ph.D. (dr.rer.nat) in Germany & M.Sc./B.Sc. in Mexico.

At my current affiliation at CIRCE Foundation (Zaragoza, Spain) as a Researcher, I work on projects that deal with Biomass valorization (e.g., organic waste into biogas), Improvement of wastewater treatment technologies and Biogas upgrading (e.g., via CO2 valorization with blue hydrogen).

Brief list of projects that I have managed / been involved in the past 10 years:

▣ AgroBioheat: "Promoting the penetration of agrobiomass heating solutions in European rural areas".

▣ RE4Industry: "100% Renewable Energies for Energy Intensive Industries".

▣ DEEP PURPLE: "Conversion of diluted mixed urban bio-wastes into sustainable materials and products in flexible purple photobiorefineries".

▣ iMETland: "Microbial Electrochemical Wetland for effective decentralized wastewater treatment".

▣ MIDES: "Microbial Desalination for Low Energy Drinking Water".

▣ BIORARE: "Microbial electrosynthesis for environmental biorefineries".

▣ DéfiH12: "Microbial electrolysis cell for bio-hydrogen production".

Chronological biography:

I was born in Oaxaca where I remained until I left at the age of 19 to start the university in Mexico City.

I have a degree on B.Sc. Environmental Engineering from UPIBI of the National Polytechnic Institute of Mexico (2001-2005). My thesis was entitled: “Batch bio-H2 production with inhibited methanogenic consortia from organic solid waste”.

Later I obtained a M.Sc. degree on Environmental Biotechnology (2005-2008) at CINVESTAV-IPN, Mexico during which I worked on the topic “Electricity production in microbial fuel cells fed with spent organic extracts from hydrogenogenic fermentation of organic solid wastes”.

From 2008 to 2012 I moved to Germany to do a Ph.D. (magna cum laude) at TU Braunschweig. There I conducted research on “Electron transfer mechanisms in electrochemically active microbial biofilms”.

In 2012 I spent 3 months at the VU Amsterdam, The Netherlands as a scientific visitor where I studied “Outer membrane cytochromes of microbial biofilms by a combination of surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering spectroscopy and electrochemistry”.

From 2012 to 2015 I moved to France where I worked as Postdoctoral Researcher at INRA-Narbonne. There I worked mainly on three topics:  (i) “Coupling H2 production by dark fermentation and microbial electrolysis”, (ii) “Electron transfer mechanisms of novel electrochemically active bacteria” and (iii) “Microbial electrosynthesis of acetate”.

From 2016 to 2018 I worked at IMDEA Water to develop novel solutions to treat Urban Wastewater by copling Microbial Electrochemical Technologies and Conventional Constructed Wetlands.

In 2019 I joined the University of Valladolid in Spain as a Senior Researcher to work on the bioconversion of biogas into added-value products such as the osmoprotectant Ectoine.

At my current affiliation at CIRCE Foundation (Zaragoza, Spain) as a Researcher I am in charge of managing a technical work package of the H2020 project RE4Industry. There I work on projects that lead with
Biomass valorization (e.g., organic waste into biogas), Improvement of wastewater treatment technologies and Biogas upgrading (e.g., via CO2 valorization with blue hydrogen).

My current CV:

Work and Research Experience

2020- : Researcher at the Circular Economy Group at CIRCE.
Technical coordinator and Work package leader of Re4IndustrySupporting a renewable energy transition for industry.
Task leader of AgrobioheatPromoting the penetration of agrobiomass heating solutions in European rural areas.

2019-2020 : The Environmental Technology Group at the University of Valladolid
DEEP PURPLE creates a holistic consortium to transform diluted urban bio-wastes, including mixed waste streams, organicfraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), wastewater (WW) and sewage sludge (SS), into feedstock for bio-industry toobtain sustainable bio-products. This revolutionary concept will be implemented in a novel Single-Site Multi-Platform Concept (Biomass, Cellulose and Biogas) to replace current polluting destructive practices with new value added concepts.
